IT’S OCTOBER 7TH
IT’S WORLD SMILE DAY!
You need no other excuse to smile today
than to celebrate the smile and what it means!

According to the World Smile Day website Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, became concerned that the smiley face he designed in 1963 had been over-commercialized and was in danger of losing its original meaning—good will and good cheer on the planet.
Thinking everyone should devote one day annually to smiles and kind acts throughout the world, he declared the first Friday in October each year to be World Smile Day.
The first World Smile Day occurred in 1999.
Two years later Harvey died. The Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was created to honor his name and memory, and is the official sponsor of World Smile Day.
To participate in the 2011 celebration, happening today (Friday, October 7th): Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile!

The Smiley Face icon has not been without controversy. Two persons claim ownership of the design.
Freelance artist Harvey Ball created the yellow smiley face that was first used in a State Mutual Life Assurance Company advertising campaign in 1963.
The image exploded in popularity when Bernard and Murray Spain used it on a collection of novelty products in the 1970s. Its uncomplicated image sent the clear message, to busy people, that life is precious and they should enjoy every minute of every day.
In 1971 a French entrepreneur named Franklin Loufrani patented the smiley face in eighty countries. He claimed he designed in in 1969. Since the patent, the general use of the icon by the population has been challenged on numerous occasions.
