HONUS WAGNER SPORTING GOODS STORE (PITTSBURGH, PA) CLOSING

Honus Wagner store has struck out—after 91 years

The sub-headline caught my attention. After all, it wasn’t until August, 2008, that I even knew about the name Honus Wagner, the Hall of Fame shortstop for the Pirates. That was the month that my daughter and son-in-law took me to a local theater to see the play Honus Wagner & Me.

Previously, I attended a baseball game in Pittsburgh with family members. It seemed the only way I could spend time with them—all of whom, except me, are sports fans. I took a picture of the family standing by a Honus Wagner statue.

Thus, seeing the sub-headline, I thought of Michael and his passion for Honus Wagner.

According to newspaper reports, the store has been a fixture in downtown Pittsburgh for 91 or 93 years. It was first  housed at 813 Liberty Avenue before moving to its current Forbes Avenue location almost sixty years ago.

Honus Wagner opened the business in 1918. By 1928 the store was in bankruptcy. E. Louis Braunstein purchased it. Today, Harriet Shapiro currently co-owns the store with her husband, Murray. After four generations of ownership, no one is left to take over the reins.

Harriet Shapiro said the store was not closing because of poor business. “Absolutely not,” she declared. “It’s a closing sale. It’s not a desperation sale or a bankruptcy sale or anything like that.”

It should be a good sale. After all, in November, a Wagner baseball card in poor condition sold for $262,000. I suspect Michael will be on the scene early on in the store’s six-week going-out-of-business sale. I wonder what, if anything, he will find.
