NATIONAL PIE DAY

‘Twould be nice to be in Rockland, Maine, today, where their seventh annual National Pie Day event is featuring more than twenty-two venues serving pie samples. This is not the average pie-in-the-sky event. Rockland’s inns and restaurants are serving everything from Shepherd’s Pie to a number of gourmet Pizza Pies to sweet and savory Italian Galettes and seafood pies. Proceeds from the event will support the food pantry.(for further info, see link at end of this post).

Meanwhile, while clearing out old magazines, I came across the following pie statistics in the November 2007 (yes, 2007, page 39) Redbook Magazine:

  • 24 % of Americans say their favorite pie is apple, with distant runners up in order: pumpkin, chocolate, lemon meringue, and cherry)
  • 6 slices, the amount of pie the average Aemrican eats each year.
  • 4 3/8 number of whole pumpkin pies xonsumed in 12 minutes by competitive eater Eric Booker on Nov 22, 2004, in New York City
  • 12 in feet, the number of the world’s largest pumpkin pie, baked by the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers in Ohio in 2005
  • 1913 Year of the first onscreen pie toss (by Mabel Norman, into Fatty Arbuckle’s face)

I feel lucky my husband’s pie of choice is pumpkin, because I personally don’t care for his selection. While attempting to maintain my weight, I am definitely not tempted to eat from his fresh pies.

Pumpkin pie is actually one of the better dessert options for those persons who are cognizant of their weight issues, according to Marisa Moore, R. D., an American Dietetic Association spokesperson in Atlanta; At 316 calories and 14 grams fat, it beats out chocolate cream (379 calories, 19 gams fat) and apple (411 calories, 19 grams fat).*

However, my favorite homemade pie is apple—wouldn’t you know, the worst offender? I often have to restrain myself  from eating too much—especially if the pie is warmed up and topped with vanilla ice cream.

Hopefully, you will enjoy a piece of pie today, National Pie Day, be it pumpkin or apple.
