ADOPTEE FINDS BIOLOGICAL FAMILY: MINE

I’m not sure HOW I found you and not sure where to write this, but PLEASE CONTACT ME. My mother is adopted, and I recently helped her get her REAL birth certificate (she was denied in earlier years) and we JUST got her REAL birth certificate…

I have a spam message, I told my husband disgustedly, as I read the above on www.carolyncholland.wordpress.com. It’s emphases and repetition—this comment was repeated three times last Wednesday, January 19, certainly had the earmarks of being spam. I fully expected the next sentence to be a plea for money because a so-called unknown relative was in a dire financial state—having their money stolen and unable to return home from a trip, needing money to get out of jail, or some such gambit.

But something kept me reading the message instead of immediately deleting it. I was e-mailed a birth certificate with a familiar town name, with familiar (and also unique) family names, and other interesting facts. However, someone could have pulled them off the internet—indeed, they could have gathered them from the very blog the comment was posted on.

Intrigued, I dialed the phone number that was included. A young woman answered. She sounded sincere. She offered to email me a copy of the birth certificate and a photograph.

Later (I had to interrupt receiving the email because I had to be at a meeting) I checked for her message. It was there. The birth certificate, which seemed official, included all the information, and more, than she had presented in her comments to my posts. Then I opened the photograph. Staring back at me was a woman who resembled my mother so much I couldn’t deny the fact.

The woman was an adoptee seeking her bio-family. There was a family rumor that my mother had placed a child for adoption. Two of my sisters had joked that someday we’d get a call…and this call had all the elements of authenticity that are necessary for a family reunion.

The revelation, excitement and adjustments are like fresh-fallen snow. By this time, her siblings have all learned of her existence. An adoptee reunited with her birth family.

    • What a question from the person who thought I was adopting a child this late in life! Why yes, this is definitely the truth.
