CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011
BANISH WRITER’S BLOCK
You’re sitting at your computer keyboard wondering what to write. You have to post today—you don’t want to lose your momentum. But nothing is there. Your mind is a complete blank. It’s the dreaded writer’s block.
GET PAST IT!
I wanted to write something about Valentine’s Day. But it appeared all had been written. I had no angle. Then I came across a newspaper column suggestive of the fact that Valentine’s Day should be banned in public schools. After all, St. Valentine is a religious figure. I used the column to jump start a skit:
This being done, I opened the morning’s newspaper to see a picture of a woman with cockroaches crawling all over her head. I turned this into a writing by my cartoon character, Cochran Cornell the Cantankerous Cockroach.
Thus, I ended up with TWO Valentine’s Day posts, both more than I wanted to use on my postaday2011 site. I posted them on my regular writing site, www.carolyncholland.wordpress.com , then wrote a postaday2011 introducing the posts, and listing other Valentine’s Day posts from other years.
Thus, newspaper items got me past the Valentine’s Day writer’s block. What steps can you take to pass your writers block?
Move away from the keyboard and look around you. Life is happening everywhere.
Do you have a gut reaction to a story in the newspaper or television? Have you heard an “eavesdrop” that was interesting? What was the weather today? Or just how you feel—depressed, sad, happy, glad—with or without an explanation? Do you have a question you need an answer to?
And don’t forget ditties about your child, your pet, your grandparent—or even your gripe, what you wanted when you went shopping, etc. Just daily life stuff.
Currently, I’m on a journey due to an adoption connection, a full sister who discovered my family. Concurrently, Oprah Winfrey did a show on the half-sister who found her. I posted a tong-in-cheek writing on that: Oprah and I: Adoption Reunion Experiences
Anywhere you connect—or don’t connect—with life can become a post. Start writing!
