The Smart Car and Mercedes-Benz USA

THE SMART CAR AND Mercedes-Benz USA

The Smart car…the tiny little thing…so adorable…made by Daimler AG of Germany.

The car is not intelligent…Smart is merely its name.

I first saw the cute little vehicle while my husband Monte and I visited our son Nolan in Munich, Germany, in November of 2000. I made Monte take a picture of Nolan and I with the car. After all, we are descendants of the SMART family.

The car may be cute. And its usefulness may rest in its ability to fit in the smallest parking spot. However, I wouldn’t want to drive it on the open road where I am competing with huge tractor-trailer vehicles and coal trucks. I can picture it being sucked under these vehicles, or blown off the road.

However, it would be a neat car to have to dart around the very local community.

Others agree that the car is impractical, stating other reasons that seem valid.

The Smart is cute, no doubt about that, but not too useful–it’s a slow two-seater with little cargo space. So it can’t carry many people or things, go fast and isn’t for distance driving. Consumer Reports doesn’t like it, either.*

February 2011 brought the announcement that the Penske Automotive Group’s three-year relationship as the exclusive U.S. distributor of Smart vehicles will end later this year and will be transferred to Mercedes-Benz USA.**

The car is small–only 106 inches long–more than 3 feet shorter than a Mini and almost 5 feet shorter than a Volkswagen ( VLKAF.PK – news – people ) New Beetle. A typical price is about $14,000 and $16,500 or so for the convertible.*

I have yet to have a ride in the Smart car. Although I have an acquaintance who has one, and, with my pleading, said he would take me out in it, we have yet to make the right connection.

I think that is as far as I will get with the Smart car. Love the thing, but I need something more practical.
