Men Will Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011

MEN WILL WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES

It should be a scene to delight in…men subjecting themselves to walking around Lynch Field in Greensburg (PA) wearing stilettos (a long, thin, high heel found on some boots and shoes, varying in length from one inch to over ten inches, and sometimes defined as having a diameter at the ground of less than one centimeter*) or one of the fifty pair of red high heels collected for the occasion.

The men will truly be walking a mile in her shoes on April 12, 2011. The Blackburn Center Against Domestic & Sexual Violence is sponsoring its first Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, part of the international Men’s March to End Sexual Assault, Rape and Gender Violence.

The Center views the event as a high visibility way to raise awareness about gender violence and to inform people of its presence in the Westmoreland County community. The men, inexperienced in walking in women’s shoes, will receive instructions.

The county is huge, and much of it is rural. Many residents are unaware of the Center’s existence.

The 2009 Fatality Report put out by Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence states that, in Pennsylvania,  180 women lost their lives that year—a 22% increase over 2008, and a 49% increase over 2007.

The Men’s March to End Sexual Assault, Rape and Gender Violence founded the walk in 2001. Since then it has raised millions of dollars to fund rape crisis centers, domestic violence shelters and other sexualized violence, education, prevention and remediation programs.

Men are allowed to walk in women’s or their own shoes. Firefighters will walk in a group, wearing their suspenders and hats. Women and children are welcome to enjoy the mile walk.

The registration fee is five dollars. For further information, or to register, click on www.blackburncenter.org, or call 724 837 9540, extension 114.

REMEMBER: Domestic violence—whether directed towards women, men, children or pets—is never OK.
