Only four Days Remain to Match April 1998’s Rainfall

ONLY FOUR DAYS REMAIN

TO MATCH APRIL 1998’S RAINFALL

It’s official. As of today, April 26, 2011, we have four more days to accumulate 0.19 inches of rainfall if we are to match a high mark of the five inches that fell in April 1998.

Persistent rain has hampered dozens of road and bridge projects across the region this month, already the rainiest April in more than a decade…Through 5 p.m. Monday, 4.81 inches of rain had fallen on the region in April, far above the average of 3.01 inches for the month, according to National Weather Service data. This year’s total is the highest for an April since 5 inches fell in 1998. There have been just 16 rainier Aprils since 1836.

At least a trace amount of rain has fallen on all but seven days this month, according to the weather service.*

The “region” is Southwestern Pennsylvania, where I live. Walking across our front lawn is like treading on a water soaked sponge. The creeks, runs, and streams have been moving rapidly. People are feeling down from the gray weather. My friend Mary told me yesterday that she was watching a broadcast from England, where it was warm and sunny.

“What’s wrong with this picture,” she asked, referring to the fact that the United States should be warm and sunny while England is known to be dreary and rainy.

“It’s (the weather) not pleasant, that’s for sure. We’re in the business to get things done, and the weather hasn’t made that easy,” said Ron Hags, an estimator with highway construction firm Swank Associated Cos. in New Kensington.

It’s time to do yard work and plant some things. Waiting for sun and warmth to do so. Yesterday provided some of those conditions. Today is starting sunny, but it is hazing up. At 9:45 a. m. it is 64 degrees on our back stoop.

Perhaps I should schedule my fifteen minutes yard work now instead of typing this post. And Monte should be outside digging dandelions at this moment.

I have my trowel in hand. Goodby!
