Earth’s Endangered Water Supplies

Earlier this month (May, 2011), the U.S. National Research Council recommended that NASA’s top priority should be a robot to help determine whether Mars ever supported life and offer insight on its geological and climatic history.

The Council is out of the loop. So speaks Venezuela’s socialist President Hugo Chavez, who knows that Mars once supported life. And he knows the reason there is a lack of life on the planet today: Capitalism may be to blame…I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet… he said in speech to mark World Water Day, celebrated on May 22 this year.

Chavez also holds capitalism responsible for many of the world’s problems…

Chavez, sipping from a glass of water, warned that water supplies on Earth were drying up: Careful! Here on planet Earth where hundreds of years ago or less there were great forests, now there are deserts. Where there were rivers, there are deserts…

While I can support his second contention, that Earth’s water supplies are endangered, I question his knowledge/theory that capitalism is the cause of the lack of life on Mars. Capitalism can be held responsible for many things, but that???

Here in the Southwestern region of Pennsylvania we are being warned that the boon being created by the Marcellus shale will be counterbalanced by the destruction of our water supplies. Unfortunately, water is not a renewable resource. Once destroyed or removed, it will change the dynamic of our culture.

Perhaps we should pay heed to the warning in the Chavez message. Cultures have been polluting their water sources forever. We need to take better care of our water supply.

However, we can reject his theory of capitalism on Mars.
