Birds or cats? Which will it be?

BIRDS OR CATS? WHICH WILL IT BE?

On November 8, 2006, Jim Stevenson of Galveston, Texas, set off a passionate debate that pit cat fanciers against bird watchers. He allegedly shot a feral cat that was endangering some birds on the island’s sand dunes. He claimed that virtually all of the birds were protected by state and local laws, under the Endangered Species Act, and asked if we should ignore the fact that the stray cats were killing them.

“Sometimes you get pushed to a point where you can no longer ignore a situation,” he said.

Law enforcement officials charged Stevenson with felony animal cruelty for allegedly shooting the cat to death. “It’s cruelty,” stated one law officer.

The founder of the Galveston Ornithological Society argued that Stevenson broke no laws—that he was performing a public service by saving the lives of beautiful birds.

The conflict between cat lovers and bird fanciers isn’t confined to Galveston. It is a debate argued in many communities across the country. It is also a debate that can divide a community.
