July 4 in Historical Events

July 4, 1966…my husband Monte and I visited my parents for a holiday picnic and announced our engagement. He met my parents for the first time.

July 4, 1959…the birthday of my younger sister, Sally June, when I was fifteen years old. She was my mother’s fourth of five children born in her second marriage.

Other perhaps surprising, lesser known things dated July 4th:

  1. 1996 HotMail, a free internet E-mail service begins
  2. 1997U.S. space probe Pathfinder lands on Ares Vallis Mars
  3. 1966  Beatles attacked in Philippines after insulting Imelda Marcos
  4. 1960 America’s new 50-star flag honoring Hawaiian statehood unfurled
1911  Ty Cobb goes 0 for 4 and ends a 40 game hit streak
  5. 1884 Statue of Liberty presented to U.S. in Paris
  6. 1865   1st edition of “Alice in Wonderland” is published
  7. 1862 Lewis Carroll creates Alice in Wonderland for Alice P. Liddell
  8. 1754…the anniversary of George Washington’s defeat by the French and Indians at Fort Necessity, Pennsylvania. It is commemorated by a surprising stained glass window in a Brownsville, Pennsylvania, Catholic church (see link below).
  9. 1636   City of Providence, Rhode Island form by Roger Williams after he was banished from Massachusetts (not verified)
  10. And of course, the reason for the holiday—to celebrate the birth of a nation: In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims the independence of the United States of America from Great Britain and its king. The declaration came 442 days after the first volleys of the American Revolution were fired at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts and marked an ideological expansion of the conflict that would eventually encourage France’s intervention on behalf of the Patriots.
