The New Frontier: More Than Fifty New Planets

CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011

THE NEW FRONTIER:

MORE THAN FIFTY NEW PLANETS

Earth’s land space is limited. Today, there are few new frontiers for the restless and unhappy to settle. The United States included—the post-American Revolution land settlement schemes no longer exist because there are no more frontiers.

Just in time NASA’s Kepler space telescope provided fresh evidence…of a universe rich with planets, as scientists revealed preliminary detection of hundreds of new worlds, including more than 50 considered to be in “habitable” zones capable of supporting life…

This is good news for the people who are always searching for new space, for their space, space in which to be free and develop their own communities.

Some of the newly discovered planets are rocky—Rocky worlds are thought more likely to have oceans and possibly life (yet it took the rocky Atlantic Ocean coastline of Downeast Maine longer to settle than the other parts of the shoreline).

…54 candidate planets in their star’s temperate “habitable zone” — neither too hot nor too cold — where oceans could persist…Moons of even the largest Jupiter-sized planets in that zone would be “habitable…

I wonder how similar the settlers lifestyles will be to the lifestyles on earth, and what obstacles will have to be challenged to life on these planets.

“We are moving in the direction we like, from bigger, easier (to find) planets to smaller, harder ones that might support life,” said Kepler science chief William Borucki of NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.

When we get to these life-supporting planets, how long will it take for them to be settled, requiring still more space to settle?

It only took the United States two hundred years…
