Autumn Apple’s Offering: Apple Cider

One of my favorite experiences of autumn is being able to drink fresh-pressed apple cider. It seems a lost art, since it’s a rarity to find such a beverage nowadays. Because of bacterial contamination stores can no longer legally sell fresh-pressed apple cider—it must be pasteurized.

My husband Monte and I were able, for the first time in years, to enjoy fresh-pressed apple cider. We actually watched the apples being loaded into the cider press, and saw the golden juice pressed out of them.

This month I also came across a story from the early 1800s on apple cider making, and read another story in a September newspaper—on a moose caught up a tree, drunk from eating apples.
