Fort Ligonier (PA): “Taste of History”

September 16, 2011, was a perfect autumn evening for Fort Ligonier’s first Taste of History celebration. Adding to the perfection was the delicious pizza baked in the beehive ovens by two volunteers.

The blue sky provided a splendid backdrop to photography. I had received a phone call just before leaving for the event, so had left minus my camera. Fortunately, my husband and daughter hadn’t left home yet, and enroute to the high school football game (which the Ligonier team won) they dropped off my camera.

The music added ambience. Although, surprisingly, I knew few people in attendance, the gathering was friendly. I wandered among the wagons, wondering at the fact that people traveled great distances in them. Then the thought crossed my mind: in two hundred years will people look back at today’s society and consider our means of travel as primitive as we consider the wagons?

The event ended as the sun set, the combination of clouds and sun rays painting a new backdrop for photographs. I’m looking forward to the second Taste of History event in 2012.
