Will This Democracy Work?

WILL THIS DEMOCRACY WORK?

I am confident that the public is watching us very closely to see if we can show this country that this democracy can work.

When U. S. Sen. Patty Murray, co-chairman of the twelve-member deficit-cutting panel established under the summer’s budget and debt deal, made the above statement it called to my mind the first (or second) president of our country.

When George Washington took over the presidency of this country, he expressed a preference to be called General Washington rather than President Washington. This wasn’t due to modesty. It was due to the fact that he (and certainly may other persons) was uncertain as to whether the country’s new government would work.

Was Sen. Murray aware that she was echoing a sentiment more than two centuries old?

The more things change the more they stay the same…
