What is a Blue Norther’?

CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011

WHAT IS A BLUE NORTHER’?

Blue Norther’: a weather phenomenon common to large areas of the world’s temperate zones—a rapidly moving autumnal cold front that often includes precipitation that is followed by a period of blue skies and cold weather.

The term blue norther is a pure Texasism, but that its weather is not unique to Texas is folklore.

Reasons why is the phenomenon might be called a blue norther:

  • It is a norther that sweeps out of the Texas panhandle under a blue-black sky
  • The appearance of the sky after the cold front has blown through
  • One supposedly turns blue from the cold*

Temperatures can drop forty to fifty degrees in a few minutes.**
