Shaken Baby Syndrome Renamed Abusive Head Trauma

CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011

SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME

RENAMED

ABUSIVE HEAD TRAUMA

     Language evolves.

     It’s been reputed that in the human service profession language evolves to keep non-professionals aware that the same syndrome has numerous a.k.a.s.

     Thus, when I read a news story on a man guilty of shaken baby syndrome (suffering neurological injuries after being shaken) I wasn’t surprised by the following statement: …the boy’s condition stems from biological factors and not Abusive Head Trauma, formerly called (more…)

Discipline Results From Expressing Positive Expectations

DISCIPLINE RESULTS FROM

EXPRESSING POSITIVE EXPECTATIONS

     I’ve seen many parents who, out of fear that their child won’t love them, will not discipline the child. Unfortunately, the goal of parenting should not be to earn the child’s love by not taking their position of parent, but to create responsible, moral, adults. In an ironic fashion, this, rather than befriending the child, is the way to earn the love of child.

     Many parents also cannot differentiate punishment and discipline. Punishment relies on external forces to create positive behaviors, and leads to problems when the child is old enough to challenge the punishment. Discipline leads to the child developing internal controls and will end up in better lasting positive behaviors.

     Discipline relies on an attitude of (more…)

To Be a Neighbor…

CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011

TO BE A NEIGHBOR…

     A story reports the survival of a toddler who fell ten stories. A woman, Wu Juping, who was passing by, caught the child.

     The child’s grandmother, who was in charge of the two year old, had left the tenth floor apartment to run an errand. Neighbors watched as the child dangled from an apartment window for several minutes before she fell.

     Neighbors saw the toddler dangling from the apartment window for (more…)

Second- and Third-Hand Smoke

SECOND- AND THIRD-HAND SMOKE

WORLD TOBACCO DAY

     Eight year old Rosemary entered my house on one of her many visits. This time she would stay for several days while her mother was in the hospital for diabetic treatment.

     Rosemary knew the routine: as soon as her mother left, she unpacked all her clothes, gathered a clean robe I provided, and took a shower. The clothes she unpacked and the ones she took off her back were immediately thrown into the washing machine. Sometimes they were run through the wash cycle twice.

     Each time we did this, Rosemary looked (more…)

Was Pedophile Wooing His Community?

CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011

WAS PEDOPHILE WOOING HIS COMMUNITY?

     John B. Shallenberger wants the Fayette County (PA) community to remember him for facilitating the presence of the Penn State University to the county. I suspect he also wanted to be remembered for offering, free, celebrity memorabilia to the population at large, an action he took in early July, 1997. He was moving to Mexico where he planned on working part time as an interpreter for Mexican Indian missionaries.

     Shallenberger’s collection included Musical scores, scripts, audition cassettes, photographs, vinyl records and posters, collected during his days as a personal manager for child actors.

     His giveaway was a boon to community residents, who expressed pleasure at acquiring the memorabilia.

     However, another of his legacies overrides his “good faith” actions: he was twice convicted in 1975 and 1985) of (more…)

PUNISHMENT OR DISCIPLINE?

     In parenting, a person must differentiate between PUNISHMENT and DISCIPLINE.

Two People Conspire: One Guilty, the Other Not Guilty

CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011

(January 12, 2011: All day snow, 21 degrees)

TWO PEOPLE CONSPIRE:

ONE GUILTY, THE OTHER NOT GUILTY

     A teen testified that on three separate occasions she awoke to find that DeWayne Calloway was touching her inappropriately.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
     A Fayette County (PA) woman, Shayna Brown, admitted to drugging a 13-year old girl so a man could try to impregnate the teen. She plead guilty to a number of charges, including conspiracy, endangering the welfare of children, corruption of minors, and unauthorized administration of an intoxicant.
     The judge ordered Brown to serve two to four years in prison, and to undergo a mental health evaluation with an emphasis on sex offender treatment. For ten years after her parole, Brown must register her address, as a sex offender, with the police.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

     Brown conspired with DeWayne Calloway to drug the girl. Although he had more than twenty charges against him, including attempted rape of an unconscious person. Calloway denied all the allegations on the stand during his trial, he was acquitted at trial, and a jury found him not guilty of all charges.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If they conspired, how can she be guilty and he not be guilty? Is he not, too, a danger to society?
     Just wondering.
How to Get Help for a Child
CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011
(January 10, 2011: 26 degrees, hazy sky, occasional light snow)
HOW TO GET HELP FOR A CHILD
      When a child needs help, and the children’s service agency ignores calls from neighbors and semi-professionals, what action can be taken?
  • Call the regional or state office of children’s services
  • Be there for the child to offer support
  • Offer the caretakers support
  • Pray for the child and his/her caretakers.
     Click on When Children’s Service Agencies Won’t Respond to Complaints    to read about how an agency ignored a call to help a child.
