A CHRISTMAS PLANET: KEPLER-22b

That huge box that won’t fit under the Christmas tree might hold the perfect present for some Earthlings. When they open it, they will find…a planet…a Christmas planet.

     A Christmas planet?

This is how one newly discovered planet was described by William Borucki, chief scientist for the Kepler telescope, launched on a planet-hunting mission in 2009.

“It’s a great gift,” Borucki said about the first planet discovered by the Kepler telescope that is confirmed in the habitable zone.

The planet, eerily similar to Earth, sits outside our solar system in what seems to be the ideal place for life…smack in the middle of what astronomers call the Goldilocks zone, that hard to find place that’s not (more…)

All’s Not Lost Re Bernie Fine

ALL’S NOT LOST RE BERNIE FINE

Sex abuse allegations against Bernie Fine, fired assistant men’s basketball coach at Syracuse University, cannot bring charges. The legal statute of limitations on the claims of two men bar prosecution.

In spite of this a New York district attorney found the two men who brought the charges are credible.

However, all is not lost. People are now (more…)

.xxx Domain Site Approval & Tougher Rules on Child Porn

CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011

.XXX DOMAIN SITE APPROVAL

&

TOUGHER RULES ON CHILD PORN

The new .xxx domains, approved in March by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)…are not available for purchase by the general public until Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

ICANN is a nonprofit that oversees the Internet’s naming system. The .xxx domain indicates that the site in question is a pornographic site.

Before the .xxx domains go public colleges and other organizations  had an advanced period in which to purchase domains. So far, groups have submitted more than 80,000 applications, with a price tag of $200 each, to purchase a domain name for a period of ten years.

This allows the public colleges and other organizations to prevent (more…)

The Fading Art of Handwritten Script

CAROLYN’S DAILY POSTS: 2011

THE FADING ART OF HANDWRITTEN SCRIPT

There is something freeing about handwritten script. It’s more personal—I feel sad whenever I type a letter to someone (because I have little patience in using writing legibly).

I find it disturbing to hear rumors that schools are abandoning teaching students  cursive writing. It is a skill that will be needed no matter how electronically misguided our world will become.

However, as a journalist and human service counselor there is also something freeing about using the keyboard during interviews (after checking to see if it doesn’t intimidate the interviewee). Unlike handwriting, typing on the keyboard allows me to (more…)

Enjoy Coffee in Moderation

ENJOY COFFEE IN MODERATION

I was in my thirties before I began drinking coffee. I started the habit when I was leading domestic violence group meetings at my dining room table, and attendees forbade me from making their coffee. My schedule was so tight that I succumbed to drinking coffee during the meetings, and discovered it helped me with a physical problem.

Since then, I have enjoyed one cup of coffee each morning while I read the daily newspaper.

Then came the time that I spent the weekend in the hospital. I’d had symptoms of (more…)

Don’t Just Sit There—Move to Maintain Health

DON’T JUST SIT THERE—

MOVE TO MAINTAIN HEALTH

More than 90.000 new cancer cases a year in the United States may be attributed to physical inactivity and prolonged periods of sititng…Excess time in seat tied to some forms of cancer, other diseases…

A conservative estimate, according to the study, which cites 49,000 cases of breast cancer and 43,000 cases of colon cancer.*

The estimate comes from an examination of United States physical activity data and cancer incidence statistics. The health risks of inactivity are added to other health risks, known by just about anyone who is aware of health issues. These risks include heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Another review of two hundred cancer studies worldwide (epidemiologist Christine Friedenreich of Alberta Health Services in Calgary, Canada) produced convincing evidence that regular physical activity reduces the risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, and endometrial cancer by (more…)

CREDIBILITY

I don’t know who the “speaker” was or what the topic was. All I know is I walked in the room and heard “child abuse has exploded since the 1970s” followed by “100 percent of the population stopped saving in the 1970s.”

I looked at Monte and said that that person had just lost (more…)

DRUG ABUSERS EXPLOIT MEDICARE PROGRAM

I don’t know how they do it.

I speak of the persons who bilk Medicare’s prescription program to feed their drug addiction, or to sell painkillers for profit. But they do:

Abuse of prescription medications is a fast-growing drug problem, particularly entrenched among teens and young adults…The Government Accountability Office found that about 170,000 Medicare recipients each received prescriptions from multiple doctors for 14 frequently abused medications in 2008.*
