Gaming in Ligonier, PA

GAMING IN LIGONIER, PENNSYLVANIA

While I spent the day in the basement of the Ligonier Valley Library (Pennsylvania) there was a group of gamers in an adjacent room.

Two other groups were at large tables involved in Warhammer, a medieval fantasy game. They were playing under the guidance of Brad College from Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Another group, the painters, were under the guidance of Robbie Flam, who with her husband Norm owns the Toy Soldier Gallery in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. The painters, under Robbie’s direction, were (more…)

Bald Eagle Sighted in Ligonier, Pennsylvania

BALD EAGLE SIGHTED IN LIGONIER, PA.

Watching the big birds soar through the air is a glorious experience that makes me wish I too could soar like they do. It also makes me wish I was accomplished at identifying the beautiful creatures flying freely.

True, I’ve photographed osprey. But I’ll admit—the only reason I know they are osprey is through their nests, which I locate high up on roosts adjacent to power poles (constructed by power companies to protect electric wires while still allowing a place for the raptors to perch).

My neighbor Dan called me tonight. He began the conversation by telling me that he sighted a majestic bald eagle this weekend.

And he sighted it here in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.

He was headed to the middle school to pick up his daughters, who had been on a school function. As he drove to the school he saw a large bird soaring over (more…)

The 2011 Hungarian Grape Festival: Ligonier, PA.

THE 2011 HUNGARIAN GRAPE FESTIVAL

LIGONIER, PENNSYLVANIA

The temperature is hovering just above freezing, in the forties during the day, the thirties at night. It has rained for at least twenty-four hours.

The phrase it was a dark and stormy night applied as my husband Monte and I drove to the Hungarian Grape Festival held in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, on this Sunday evening. Although the weather was inclement, the ambience inside was equally warm. We many new people and ate a good meal that included, of course, Hungarian goulash.

Lorana Sallai (Andrew) receives his sheriff's badge

A traditional harvest activity occurred throughout the evening. Fruit, hung from the rafters, was there for people to grab and enjoy. However, if one of the two sheriffs caught them, they were penalized by a $1.00 fine. At the end of the evening the person who had the biggest “harvest” won a prize. Where else would a person be rewarded for being the biggest thief???

One of the sheriff is visiting the United States, coming from Transylvania. Lorano Sallai (Andrew) Amoras is staying in Hazelwood while here.

FORT LIGONIER (PA):

“TASTE OF HISTORY”PARTY

September 16, 2011, was a perfect autumn evening for Fort Ligonier’s first Taste of History celebration. Adding to the perfection was the delicious pizza baked in the beehive ovens by two volunteers.

The blue sky provided a splendid backdrop to photography. I had received a phone call just before leaving for the event, so had left minus my camera. Fortunately, (more…)

READING OF THE CONSTITUTION

IN LIGONIER, PA.

Carolyn Cornell Holland reading the Constitution

My friend Chuck recorded this photo of my participation in tonight’s reading of the Constitution held at the Ligonier Theater in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. It was simply a reading, no opinions inserted. The event took just about one hour, and thirty people were present, including the readers, most of whomattend Ligonier’s Tuesday Mellow Mike night. The event was organized by Diane Cipa.  See more photos at Reading the Constitution, Mellow Mike, & Football: Ligonier, Pa., 9/02/11  (more…)

The 2011 Ligonier (PA) Summer Concert Finale

THE 2011 LIGONIER (PA)

SUMMER CONCERT FINALE

A generous Ligonier crowd spent Sunday evening sitting under blue skies decorated with white clouds trimmed with dark gray. A soft cool breeze blew over them, a breeze which held the promise of autumn.  Fortunately, the worst weather of Hurricane Irene didn’t hit Ligonier.

The Somerset County Community Band performed the final concert of Ligonier’s summer Sunday evening concert series. The first half included many show tunes.

During intermission something flew into my eye. I felt a stinging sensation.  The police offered to call an ambulance, but I wouldn’t do that to the emergency crew. All I needed was a mirror. Which was inside the closed Town Hall building. I sought the head of (more…)

COWABUNGA! WOWABUNGA!

Sometimes a chance piece of information included in a print media article takes you back to the past. This happened while reading an article on Idlewild Park’s new multi-million dollar wave pool, the single-largest capital improvement project in the amusement park’s history.*

The 182 foot-long pool, which delivers seven minutes of waves for every 10 minutes of calm water, is named (to read more click on www.carolyncholland.wordpress.com )

PIRATES OF PENANCE JR.

AT THE LIGONIER (PA) THEATER

The voices of Cathy, Dom and Diane filled the Ligonier Valley Theater in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, for four shows on Sunday July 12, 2011. They sang out to entertain visitors to the theater on the town’s Community Days.

However, this veteran trio of show people were outdone by a group of youth who presented showtunes from Pirates of Penzance, Jr., a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta: (more…)
