WAS PEDOPHILE WOOING HIS COMMUNITY?

     John B. Shallenberger wants the Fayette County (PA) community to remember him for facilitating the presence of the Penn State University to the county. I suspect he also wanted to be remembered for offering, free, celebrity memorabilia to the population at large, an action he took in early July, 1997. He was moving to Mexico where he planned on working part time as an interpreter for Mexican Indian missionaries.

     Shallenberger’s collection included Musical scores, scripts, audition cassettes, photographs, vinyl records and posters, collected during his days as a personal manager for child actors.

     His giveaway was a boon to community residents, who expressed pleasure at acquiring the memorabilia.

     However, another of his legacies overrides his “good faith” actions: he was twice convicted in 1975 and 1985) of molesting boys on choir tours he organized. One was a youth from southwest Pennsylvania, and the other was a Dutch youth. He had been jailed briefly in 1996 for organizing choir tours in violation of a court order. Before we ever moved to Connellsville, where he lived, I’d known of his behavior.

     Shallenberger demonstrated some typical characteristics of pedophile sex offenders. That he gave away, rather than sold, his collection, was an action that would wooed the public into thinking he was a good guy. Ultimately, his two legacies, that of public service and that of pedophilia, serve only to confuse the public: Is he a nice guy? How could such a nice guy be so guilty of such nasty actions? Victims must deal with this question, and often come to the conclusion that they themselves, not the perpetrator, are the cause of the perpetrator’s behavior, leaving them with the angst of guilt.

     So I question: was Shallenberger really a good guy with the interest of the public at the forefront, or were his actions meant to confuse the public into thinking he couldn’t be guilty of pedophilia?
